Ah, the sun. It’s our best friend in the long summer days and our long lost lover on those dreadful winter nights. The idea of tanning was never popular to start out with; historically, those who tanned or have darker skin were considered of the lower class as they had to be out in the sun and fields working. Pale skin was favored as it meant you had the wealth and luxuries to stay indoors. However, that all changed and tanning was brought popular by the ever so famous Coco Chanel. In the 1920’s, Coco went on a vacation and came home tanned – as she was an influential designer, people took this as the next big thing and that’s how tanning became mainstream.

Today, tanning is widely popular with the exception of Asia who are obsessed with fair skin. If you’ve ever traveled to Asia and strolled along the cosmetic isle, you’ll find all sorts of products promoting skin whitening and lightening. As for the Americas and many places, it’s safe to say that tanning and being in the sun to achieve that tropical looking glow is ever too common. Along with that radiant glow, you also risk yourself to skin problems that may lead to something potentially dangerous – skin cancer. Over-exposure can also lead to premature aging, wrinkles, discoloration, freckles…and the list goes on and on.

Maybe seeing is more believing, especially with my non-stop blabbering. So ta-da, I bring you a video to show you exactly why Sunblock is so important. Video source: YouTube.

I always add SPF to my skincare and makeup routine regardless if the sun is out or not. It’s just another layer of protection. With the right products you can really protect yourself. I use a base that contains SPF 50+++ which protects from both UVA and UVB. UVA and UVB both cause skin cancer and premature aging and promotes black spots and freckles from overexposure to the sun.
